How to pick a tapware finish you will love forever

2020 Trend update: what is in, what is out, and what will stay forever

We are almost one month into 2020 and new year means new trends. I have been looking for what is going to happen in the world of interior design this year and I’ll be honest, so far, I love it all!

From furniture to materials & colours, 2020 is shaping up to be centred around the user and their wellbeing, and focusing on mindful living. This is exactly what Dulux has revelead with their 2020 forecast, which you can find out all about in this blog post.

Today I want to talk about tapware. There are so many options out there and let me tell you, things have changed since 2019 in the tapware world! Let me take you through all the finishes, so you know what you can avoid, what you should consider, and how to pick a tapware finish you will love forever!

The ones to forget (at least for now)

  • Black

Matt black was all the rage a few years ago, everyone (me included) loved it because it looked like a statement piece, adding contrast and a sort of understated class. I like that it took the “bling” away from bathrooms and kitchens. In 2019 though, we started looking for something that felt a bit more textured, and we slowly moved away from the flat matt black.

  • Chrome

Chrome has been around forever and it is the cheapest option most of the time, which I think is why, no matter how fancy it is, it always looks kind of cheap. I also think it looks and feels quite cold. It works well in laundries and other rooms the aren’t super visible, but trust me, your kitchen and bathroom deserve better.

The ones to look out for

  • White

There is something I really like about white tapware finish. If you are going for a minimal, clean, bright style, then white is for you. It has a way of disappearing in its surrounding, especially when combined with a white sink and light coloured bench top. If you go for a glossy finish and classic style, it will look very retro. If you go for matte white and simple style, it will look very modern, but still quite versatile.

  •  Gunmetal

When I was slowly getting over matt black, I started specifying gunmetal, which I now LOVE! It has the dark, bold look of matt black but with that texture that instantly adds sophistication to it. If you pair it with a gunmetal sink and kitchen appliances, it looks A-mazing. I hope it is here to stay and becomes more popular this year!

The ones that are here to stay

  • Brushed metal

Brass, copper, or any other colour, you cannot go wrong with brush metal. It is classy, timeless and works with any style. You just need to pick the colour that is right for you. Brass is a bit more feminine while copper has an industrial feel (loved using it for a bachelor’s pad recently)

Brushed nickel is the one you should go for if you don’t want to take any risk.

My only reserve is Rose Gold, this one probably has to go into the “ones to look out for” section, let me know what you think!

Pro tip: Whatever stage of your project you are at, always try to choose your finishes all together. If you have chosen your tiles or your stone already, take samples with you to choose your tapware, and vice versa. This is the best way to make sure it all works together.
