The Most Unique Airbnb Stays in Bali

Where to stay when you want to avoid the big resorts and truly experience the island

A few years ago, my boyfriend and I went on a holiday to Bali, and that was the trip that made me realise I had to start living more consciously.

I am used to fishing off Sydney, and the water is unbelievable. Even from the harbour, it can be hard for some people (me included) to understand the damage of plastic pollution when we don’t see it.

On that trip, I saw guys cleaning the beach every morning, removing plastic that had washed off on the beach overnight. They would do it really early, so that tourists could just wake up to a beautiful, clean beach. Then, we went fishing on a traditional boat, and as we were driving out, I started seeing the plastic. I had my feet in the water and plastic bags would get caught in them. We actually caught more trash than fish on that trip. That was my wake up call.

Bali has introduced a plastic ban last year, and they are working on becoming more eco-friendly. The island has suffered a lot last year, between volcanoes and earthquakes, and developed a bad reputation for mass tourism and lack of authenticity.

But The Balinese people rely immensely on tourism to survive too, and I believe it deserves a “Second Chance”

So I have scrolled for hours to find you the most unique Airbnb Stays in Bali, so you can experience the Island in the most authentic way and make the most of this beautiful, enchanting island.

Stay in a Joglo Home

Bennu House • Ubud • Up to 4 guests • From $160AUD

This is a century-old reclaimed and repurposed teak “Joglo” Home, in the middle of a rice field but only 7min ride from Ubud Centre. It is decorated in a minimal conscious style and made for indoor/outdoor living.

Why not try a Dome House?

New Earth Haven • Ubud • Up to 3 guests • From $113AUD

I mean, just look at it! This is a 2 storey dome house located in the middle of rice fields. Following the principles of Bio-architecture, it is focused on sustainable living and small footprint. Perfect for the eco-tourist and nature lover.

How about a Hut?

Can you believe this bamboo hut in the rice fields is only a five minute walk to Ubud?! This is true tropical living: open living, no air con, entirely woven built. So bring your insect repellent, and enjoy the sunset over the fields.

Or maybe a treehouse?

Balian treehouse • Balian Beach • Up to 2 guests • From $130AUD

If paradise exists, it probably looks like this. This place is so lush and only 3 minute walk to the beach. Imagine standing on that balcony, a cocktail in hand and looking at that view…

Or a jungle hideout

Bigger group? Need a villa

180 view villa • Singaraja • Up to 8 guests • From $260AUD

One of the most popular ways to stay in Bali is to rent a villa, but this one is something else! From an architectural point of view, it is simply stunning. It also sits in one of the last remaining untouched parts of the island, so that’s pretty special.
