5 Affordable Ways to Maximise your Bedroom Storage

The only pro tips you need if you have a small bedroom and an even smaller wardrobe

If you are reading this, you are probably on a journey to a more minimal, simple life. You might want to declutter, or just get better organised. Whatever it is that you want to achieve, I’ve got you!

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about Feng Shui for your bedroom, and it was basically saying you should have the bare minimum in there, not even under bed storage, so you can avoid visual distractions and your energy can flow freely. But where are you supposed to put your clothes? And your extra pillows? What about your books and these clothes you wore once and are not ready to get into the laundry basket?

I have got a few smart, easy and affordable solutions to make the most of your bedroom whilst keeping it Feng Shui, decluttered and minimal. Here are 5 affordable ways to maximise your bedroom storage:

1. Smart Wardrobe Storage

There are so many amazing products out there to make the most of your wardrobe space.

  • Rail space

The best thing you can do is hang as much as you can, but if you don’t have enough rail space, you are going to need these amazing hangers. You can put up to 5 items on each, I really like their minimal design and the fact that they are welded solid metal. They will just last forever!

  • Floorspace

Use shoe racks, or baskets, to store your shoes, accessories and smaller items. I also like using small sets of drawers inside or my wardrobe for jewellery, socks etc.

  • Upper Shelves

It is so tempting to just keep “wacking” things up there but don’t tell me you manage to keep the shelf organised at all time, I won’t believe you! Try boxes and baskets with the clothes you use less often, or those that are out of season.

2. Dress for the Season

This is something that I am having a hard time doing (especially living in Australia): having a “winter” wardrobe and a “summer” wardrobe. But I know those who do that absolutely love it! When the seasons changes, put away your winter/summer clothes. Not only will you save a lot of space but it will also make it a lot easier for you to choose what to wear. If you are reading this and you are doing it, please share your experience in the comments with your best tips!

If you don’t have a spare room or storage to put your clothes away, consider vacuum bags and using that top shelf in your wardrobe.

3. Make the most of the Back of Doors

I love over-door hooks. They are perfect if you are renting (like me). If you have your own home, normal hooks could be a nice design detail too! Use them on the back of your bedroom door for night gowns, sweaters etc.. that you use regularly. This one works for me because I sleep with my door open, so technically I don’t see “the mess”.

If your wardrobe doors are hinged, then make the most of the inside by installing shoe or sock/underwear storage. It perfect for hats too! Check out this one from Amazon.

4. Multi-Functionality is KEY

If you have enough room for a piece of furniture, make it functional. A bench at the end of the bed needs to be a chest. A stool should definitely have a lid and double up as storage. A small open shelf cube can have a few books and plant on top. The key here is: Multifunction

5. Choose the right Bedside Table

Make your bedside table as big as possible, and with drawers. So much storage gets waisted with tiny open bedside table. Not only does it give you limited space for a lamp, a book, your glasses and whatnot but the space underneath is lost and all you can see is cables… no thanks!

Choose the biggest bedside table with drawers possible. If you are on a budget, look at the Malm one from ikea (I have it and have about 10 small handbags stored in the bottom drawer). If you have a bit more space and coins to spend, I would strongly suggest you look at chest of drawers. It works really well if your bed if fairly high.

PRO TIP: make sure the top of the bedside table is lower than the top of your mattress
